Southern Tasmania has an incredible line-up of festivals over the coming months.
These events all drive strong visitation from interstate markets, so to help you get a piece of the action, here's a summary of what's on and when:
This provocative midwinter festival was created by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) and began in 2013. Celebrating dark and ancient pagan rituals, attendees will revel in extreme merry-making and create memories that will last a lifetime. Everywhere you turn in Hobart there is music, art, food, and film that explore the links between ancient and modern mythology, dark and light, birth and death. The Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is an annual event hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, starting in Sydney, New South Wales, on Boxing Day and finishing in Hobart, Tasmania. The race distance is approximately 630 nautical miles.
It is one of the toughest and most respected Category 1 ocean races in the world. It’s the only major race that starts in a harbour, takes in a passage and finishes in a river. A fleet in excess of 100 yachts is expected, ranging from 36 to 100 feet in length. The electric pre-race village atmosphere at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) followed by the excitement of the build-up to the start on Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day is hard to describe.
There will be thousands of spectator vessels, helicopters overhead and hundreds of thousands of people lining the Sydney waterfront and cliff tops, the race start at 1pm on Boxing Day in Sydney and arrive in Hobart in time for New Years celebrations, the Taste of Tasmania Festival and a range of great local activities and sights.
Salamanca Market is Tasmania's most visited tourist attraction and runs each Saturday from 8.30 am to 3 pm, rain, hail, or shine.
The market extends the full length of Hobart's historic Salamanca Place, from the silos end to the top of Davey Street. You will find a huge selection of locally made products and you can meet the makers, the artisans, the designers and producers.
With over 300 stallholders, the market includes fresh produce from local growers, hot coffee, delicious breakfast and lunch options, lots of gift ideas, and plenty of handmade products.
The market is one of those special places where you can find plenty of handmade and homegrown produce, mingle with the locals, enjoy the vibrancy and atmosphere, and discover the heart of a creative island.
The market is a must-do whist staying with us at The Lodge on Elizabeth.
